2009 State Political Leaders Fellowship
2010 Application Deadlines
The deadlines for each of the Fellowships will be announced later in 2010.
How much does the Fellowship cost?
The 9-month Fellowship costs $900. That fee covers all training sessions and materials, food during the weekend training workshops, monthly coaching meetings, receptions and other networking events, and online discussion boards and community building tools.
What does that fee cover?
The fee covers all aspects of the Fellowship training sessions including materials, space, food and guest speakers; however, the fee does not cover transportation (or housing expenses) to and from training events, including weekend workshops and coaching sessions.
Is this a full-time program -- can I still hold my job?
The Fellowship is designed as a part-time program for people who are working full-time in other jobs and are looking for training and mentoring to help them with their long-term political and career objectives.
What does the Fellowship cover?
The Fellowship covers a small set of topics designed for individuals who are interested in running organizations, running for office, or running a campaign to advance progressive change in their communities. Those topics include: Progressive Philosophy, Vision & Values; Communications & Messaging; Fundraising; Grassroots Organizing and Campaign Planning and High-Impact Leadership.
Sessions are led by CPL's state and national staff, as well as national and state-wide leaders in each area. Each State Fellowship also covers a small set of topics that are specific to the political landscape and challenges facing the state.
Where will the trainings and events occur?
Specific dates and locations will be announced at least 6 weeks before each training session. The initial 2-day state-wide orientation training will take place at an announced date. Subsequent weekend workshops will take place during a weekend in different parts of the state. Monthly coaching sessions will also take place in locations across the state.
Is this fellowship limited to people from any particular party?
No. As a non-partisan organization, the Center for Progressive Leadership does not require participants to identify with any particular political party.
I can't afford the tuition -- should I still apply?
Yes. The Center for Progressive Leadership is dedicated to ensuring that economic considerations are not a barrier for highly qualified and committed emerging progressive leaders to participate in the Fellowship. We will have a small number of scholarships available to defray a significant portion of the $900 program fee. Scholarship applicants will still be required to provide their own transportation for program activities.
Will CPL contribute to my campaign?
No. As a 501(c)(3) non-profit, the Center for Progressive Leadership is forbidden by Federal law from partisan political activity, including campaign contributions. We will be providing you with training to develop the skills and connections necessary to do your own fundraising or organizing for any elected office you choose to seek at a later point.
How much of my time will the program require?
The Fellowship takes, on average over the course of the 9 months, about 2-5 hours a week for participants. Fellows are required to participate in the following activities:
- 5 Two-day weekend workshops across the state over the 9 months, including Orientation and Closing Ceremonies
- Monthly coaching sessions with your coach and/or a small group of other Fellows. Coaching sessions will be offered throughout the state to make it convenient for geographically diverse Fellows.
- Additional 4-6 hours a month working independently, with your coach, or with other fellows on specific projects to develop skills in a particular area, such as writing speeches, compiling fundraising lists, or developing a media strategy. Work can be done by phone, email, or using the Fellowship website.
The Fellowship is a program for ambitious leaders with ambitious goals. Developing the comprehensive set of skills and connections necessary to run for elected office or hold an organizational leadership position will require a considerable commitment of time and effort on your part.
